I’ve been preparing for a trip to Zurich where I’ll meet with a consulting company for pharmaceutical companies.
When it comes to leadership concepts, nothing lives in a vacuum but everything overlaps.
This particular company wants to focus on getting feedback because it’s so important and I’m going to be walking them through that process.
“Clarity is power.” I believe the more clear you are, the more your brain knows how to get there.
Creating a relationship is important too. With my team, I always find some time to have personal interaction with them. Making time to ask how they’re doing, how their family is, and how their weekend was. It’s important to take time to talk to people about non-work related things because the reality is when you build a relationship with someone they’re more likely to listen when you need to have perhaps a difficult conversation.
“Make feedback normal, not a performance review.”
A couple books I’d recommend if you want to improve in the area of feedback:
It’s the responsibility of the leader to tell people what they need to know. Don’t steer away from those conversations of giving feedback. Giving feedback shows you care about a person and want to help them.
If you have a problem with a co-worker, I’d recommend talking with them first.
If you need to provide feedback to a leader, wait for the invitation to do so. As a leader, you always have a blind spot so you need to ask your team for feedback sometimes too.
